CIMBUX INC. (The Committee for the Improvement of Buxton, Inc.) is one of the first Guyanese organizations in the Washington Metropolitan Area and is the first Buxtonian organization, that has tried to give back to the communities of Buxton, Friendship and Annandale South. The following summarizes most of our work and accomplishments of the organization in Buxton, Guyana and the United States of America (USA).
CIMBUX INC., Inc. was formed in 1971 based on an idea from Donald Thomas (DT), then a Howard University law student, working with an initial committee which included Beverly Easton Hermonstyne, Ingrid (Crispine) Thomas, Oscar Henry (Joe Phil) and Gordon Wilson (Gus). Other members were recruited as time progressed. At that time many Buxtonians had migrated to the United States of America (USA) to study. Howard University was the was the main University chosen by these students and many of them had to live together in different apartments in order to save and accumulate funds to attend school, while working part- time. Meetings were held in founding members homes at North West, Washington DC, an area where many Buxtonians were concentrated.
From the inception of this organization to the present, the main goal has been to improve the educational standard in Buxton/Friendship Vigilance and surrounding villages. However, constitutionally, other areas of focus included the cultural, social and economic awareness in Buxton, Guyana and in the United States of America, where the organization operates.
The organization’s first contributions, after raising funds from house parties, consisted of a donation of library books delivered by DT to Buxton, assistance to improve the ball-ground and a donation of track shoes for village kids through Martin Stephenson (Track Coach). From its inception, the committee reached out to Buxtonians and supporters residing in North America, with a focus on Brooklyn and Toronto in Canada. Mr. Thomas (DT) and the committee functioned for a few years in the Washington Metropolitan Area, before DT moved to New York and formed BESAC. In 1987 CIMBUX, Inc. was recuscitated by Mr. George Abrams who became the President, followed by Keith Easton, Pamela De Souza, Jude Greene, George Hinds (Acting), Gladstone Marcus and Horace Azore.
CIMBUX INC., like many other organizations in and out of the USA, has had its challenges over the years, but it has weathered the storms and is today continuing on it mission to contribute to the improvement of Buxton with scholarships, educational programs, distribution of school supplies, seminars, reunions, cultural plays , family picnic and fundraising activities in the United States of America.
CIMBUX INC., held its first reunion in 1987 at the Washington Plaza hotel In Washington DC. and has kept up the tradition, biennially, of recognizing Buxtonians in Guyana and the USA for their contributions in various areas and disciplines.
In 1989 we held our Reunion celebrations in New York, U.S.A., 1990 in Canada and in 1993 in Buxton/ Friendship, Guyana and this tradition has continued since, every two years.
The history of CIMBUX, INC., Inc. is further outlined by our accomplishments shown in another part of the website and consists of numerous programs and activities that have been targeted to the welfare of the youth and citizens of Buxton/ Friendship, the surrounding areas and the United States of America.
